A subway in Los Angeles where the car reigns supreme? Many residents don't even realize it exists, but many more depend on it everyday for transportation. The Red Line underground rail has been open since 1993, and its most recent extension was opened in 1996. Although only about 7 miles in length, it is a great way to travel downtown from Mid-City, avoiding parking and traffic hassles. The above picture is a collage of some of the structures at the Vermont/Wilshire station, designed by artist Peter Shire. As the sign indicates, not all forms of transportation are endorsed by the Transit Autority!
