It sounds like a great idea when aspiring filmmaker Robert Hawkins (Carlton Wilborn) hand picks dancer Lili Arguelo (Roselyn Sanchez) as the subject of a slice-of-life documentary. But Lili soon feels that Robert is intruding on her life and invading her privacy. Lili's dance instructor Sylvia (Valarie Pettiford) grants Robert access to her class but when Robert distracts Lili, her normally flawless steps become off beat as she focuses on the camera lens as opposed to her dance. Lili's friends are also behaving differently. Her roommate Reese (Stephanie Dicker) overacts when Robert films her, and her friends Liz (Lesli Margherita) and Adam (Matt Winston), who make up the Lewis & Clark comedy duo, scheme to appear at the grocery store when they know she will be there with the camera on.
Flustered, Lili turns to acting coach David (William R. Moses), who advises her to continue the filming and also to let some of her family life be filmed. With Robert's camera rolling, her parents start arguing in Spanish! An insensitive Robert wants a translation of their argument, creating even greater discomfort for Lili.
In the meantime, Reese wins a big role in the stage play "Pawn," directed by the renowned Victoria Swope (Diane Salinger). When the director decides the character must appear nude, Reese tries in vain to persuade Swope to leave the character's clothes on. The director stands by her choice and Reese ultimately gives up the role.
Robert apologizes to Lili with a well-cut, abbreviated version of his film that shows all the elements of her life without being exploitative. The swing song Suzanne and T.J. have written is a huge dance hit at the club Who's Who, and club manager Marcus (Andy Milder) reveals the contents of Ryan's "fictional" story to Suzanne. Suzanne seeks Ryan outside of the club and proves that life does not always imitate art.
